Did you know that the average handbag weighs 3.5 kilos?  Yes the book, the make-up, the water bottle, the wallet and the children’s toys all weigh you down.  How do you carry your bag– on your shoulder or in the crook of your arm?  Either method will impact your lower back, shoulder and neck as you adjust your body to carry the unbalanced weight.  So what can you do?

  1. Only carry essential items
  2. Get a messenger bag (one that you can carry across your body) or a backpack to more evenly distribute the additional weight
  3. Buy a smaller and/or lighter bag so that you are unable to carry so much
  4. When carrying a heavy bag, leave the high heels at home, they will only magnify the strain on the lower back.
  5. Have regular massage.
